AI Driven Fraud: A Growing Threat Pakistan Cannot Ignore by Um-e-Abeha
AI has become a great source of concern and an alarming threat in this new era of the digital world, resulting in higher rates of crimes that remain unsolved and highly technical to get penalised due to advancing technology, yet there is a lack of advancement in laws, rules or regulations enforced against them. The threat is not just real but is immediate as well, leaving us with a greater disadvantage of time to combat with these rising issues. As per some recent reports, there has been an increase of 35% in the rates of cybercrime in Pakistan by 2025 which has already resulted in a loss of Rs 3 billion reported to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) all of these show how timely actions are needed to avoid our economy from completely getting strained.
Criminals now use tools like Nano Banana technology to alter faces and generate convincing images performing highly complicated attacks like deepfakes and polymorphic malwares without requiring much skill. A recent global example involving a UK-based firm named Arup saw criminals use AI to impersonate a senior executive and approve a $25 million transfer fraud. Local reports now show how quickly public trust in digital spaces is weakening here in Pakistan.
I strongly believe that to fight against the dangerous risks of AI, Pakistan must urgently update the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 to cover AI-generated offences. We must also launch a nationwide mandatory digital literacy campaign to strengthen the "human firewall" against these super realistic threats. AI is our strongest defence, but its full strength cannot be realised without an updated legal framework.
